I started trying to go on local adventures last year before the weather got cold. We managed to find Peachtree Rock and even a new place to eat.

Peachtree Rock

Here’s the awesome rock. It was a great place to explore with even some little waterfalls and streams in the area. If you didn’t know to look for it, you probably wouldn’t even find the entrance to the trails.

Peachtree Rock Pushing Blake

Here, Amy and I try to push Blake off one of the rocks. There’s all kinds of fun that can be had in the woods!

Peachtree Rock Stephen

And Stephen documented a little bit of our explorations with his video camera.

This year, I want to find more interesting local places. One of the tops on my list is quicksand in Aiken. There isn’t a whole lot of information out there on the quicksand, but I know it can be found here. I also found some random picture of the area here. So, as you can see, it will be quite an exploration just finding the quicksand, but I’m determined to do this.

sc maps

And did you know that you can request books and maps of South Carolina and they’ll just send them to you? It’s true and pretty awesome. The book has information on all kinds of attractions in the state, but the part that I’m finding the most interesting and useful is in the back of the book where they break the state into “places” and give some highlights on each one. It makes adventuring more manageable and easier to plan. I also like the thought of opening the map and throwing a dime or some other small object on it and wherever it lands is where the adventure is. That approach helps you embrace not just the destination, but the journey. I think that, perhaps, one of the major “rules” for adventuring should be no using interstates when possible. The highways will offer more of an opportunity to go off the beaten path. It might take longer, but if it’s about the journey, it won’t matter.

So, who’s up for an adventure?!

I am overdue for an adventure. Not so sure about the
Quicksand though. That’s up there with a rattlesnake petting zoo for me. 🙂

Well, Ernest, real quicksand isn’t like the kind in cartoons, unfortunately (or maybe fortunately). Chances are it won’t be incredibly impressive, but I still want to find it. As far as the rattlesnake petting zoo, I’ve always referred to that place as “the church down that dirt road.”

South Carolina has a lot of adventures. I’ll show you my book and we can get some together 🙂
