Not too long ago, I made some of the best pizza I ever tasted. No lie. Ever since my food allergies have elevated to “potentially life threatening” status, I’ve been more interested in what ingredients actually go into my food. It’s amazing how processed a lot of the things we eat actually is. What’s even more amazing is how much better you start to feel once you cut out a lot of that processed food and replace it with more natural ingredients. When I decided to experiment with making pizza from scratch, I grabbed my friend, Crystal to help me. While not every ingredient was ALL natural or organic, I saw and controlled every single thing that went into my food; from the dough to the sauce to the toppings. Here’s how it went down.
You have to start first with the dough. This particular dough took roughly two hours to do all it’s rising and readying to become the base of our pizza.
In case you’re curious, here’s where I got the dough recipe.
While the dough is doing it’s thing, it’s wise to get to work on the sauce. This is the first sauce I’ve ever made from fresh tomatoes. Though once we followed the recipe, we didn’t think it was enough, so we added some canned tomatoes and added some other things, including fresh oregano from my yard (the only plant I haven’t killed, ha!), haha.
Toppings are also crucial. I’m a fan of meat, so we made sure we had plenty for the pizza.
Bacon is not just a great topping, but an important food group. Here’s Crystal displaying the bacon.
While I love meat, I’m also a fan of vegetables. There were mushrooms, onions, artichokes, etc.
Crystal’s mom would be so proud to see her cooking.
Of course, the most important topping for a pizza is the CHEESE! For fresh pizza, only fresh mozzarella will do.
Here’s one of the finished products after half a day of laboring in the kitchen.
My talking bacon settled down with a can of Throwback Mountain Dew and a slice of pizza.
Crystal enjoyed the fruits of our labor.
Crystal’s youngest sister Courtney came by to admire our artistry as well.
And of course, while you’re at my house, you might as well add to the window art!
I hope you enjoyed this journey in pizza making. I sure did. But now I’m hungry …
