I’ve lived in Cayce for almost 5 years now. I’ve known of its existence for at least that long, but never ventured into the little restaurant at the corner of the strip mall on Knox Abbott Drive. From the outside, it didn’t look like much. I couldn’t even figure out how people sat down to eat since it appears to cover only a small area. A year or two ago, I read that The Kingsman had one of the best steaks around. “That place?” I thought, “Perhaps I should try it.” Then I never did. My bad.
A few months ago, my friend Golfer Lauren (all my Lauren friends have nicknames, remember?) and I were talking about restaurants we needed to try and we both mentioned The Kingsman. We resolved to go there soon. While neither of us are notorious to sticking to resolutions, when it comes to food (consuming, not restrictions), we have a pretty good record of follow-through. Lauren unintentionally cheated on me a bit when her work brought in cheesesteaks from The Kingsman before our trip. She said they were the best cheesesteaks in town and that she couldn’t wait to go back there and get another one. That was all I needed to hear to get me there.

Lauren and I, along with my friend Jarrett, decided to go for lunch and we were not disappointed. We discovered that there is a good bit more seating than it appears from the outside. It has a nice, cozy atmosphere, nothing fancy, but nothing trashy either. The menu wasn’t that large, but it all looked good. It had your typical American fare, burgers, sandwiches, steaks and sides based on potatoes. Since Lauren had such a good experience with the cheesesteak, we each ordered one.

I do have to say that ever since my favorite place for cheesesteak, Paul’s Philadelphia Eatery closed, The Kingsman offers the best cheesesteak here in Columbia (as far as I’m aware). Now, even though I’ve never been to Philly, I’m sure it doesn’t rival the real Philly cheesesteaks, but hey, whaddya do when you’re in SC, eh? So, bottom line, I’ll be going back to The Kingsman again. That obscure little place in the corner of the strip mall is now a land of yummy steaky treasures.
